Building a Temperature Controlled Shed - Part 2
Share
It's about 90% done! I'm happy with how it turned out - it looks great on the outside, is solid and fully insulated on the inside and is keeping around 50 degrees with 86% humidity right now - it's been warm weather here lately (weird). I've only stored a couple of shoeboxes worth of dahlia tubers in there - as I've just started digging this week. I'm not worried about the temp - it will drop over the coming weeks.
Features I didn't mention in Part1:
Vapor Barrier: There is a plastic sheet on the ground underneath the shed acting as a vapor barrier - to prevent moisture from condensing underneath on the insulation. Fun fact - it's more humid in the PNW during the summer than it is in the winter - I had no idea.
Windows for future A/C units: Rob my contractor framed out the locations where future A/C units will go. NICE! There are insulated inserts in there now that I can remove when it's time.
Insulation: This is R-25 4" insulation that is in the walls, roof, and under the floor. This is what is recommended by Coolbot, so that is what I used. The contractors nicely framed in the insulation with 1" strips so it doesn't get loose. Later, I may decide to install plastic pegboard over the top - an alternative to drywall that I can hang things on.
Racks : The ceilings are 8' on the short side and 10' on the tall side so I can even add shelves up high for more storage. I designed the space to fit 4'x2'x6' racks that can be filled to the brim. The racks are heavy - the first one I put together inside the shed so I didn't have to lift it by myself - it's probably 100lbs… Next I'll look for some friends to help me move them in (I'll put them together in the garage).

Still To Do:
I haven't installed the electricity yet, In the meantime I can run an extension cord out there. I will add the A/C & the Coolbot in the spring - no need to install now - I won't be using them for a while.
Paint: It's a lovely yellow hardy board color right now - I'm going with a dark grey/charcoal - the same color I plan on painting the house when I need to (afraid it's going come sooner than I'd like).
That's it for now - back to digging and cleaning up the gardens!
